Chronic pain and complex conditions
If you are reading this page, chances are you have consulted before. Possibly several times. Perhaps you have had tests that showed nothing conclusive, or tried treatments whose effect did not last.
Pain that persists beyond three months no longer behaves like a recent injury. The nervous system adapts to its presence; pain can become more intense or more widespread than the state of the tissues would suggest. Sleep, activity level and one's relationship with movement also change, and these elements interact with one another.
This does not mean the pain is imaginary. It means it cannot be approached as a sprain that lasted too long.

What an assessment involves
Screening for warning signs
Before anything else, the examination aims to rule out signs that may point to serious pathology warranting medical investigation.
The full history
How the pain began, how it evolved, what aggravates and relieves it, what has already been tried and with what result. This step takes time, deliberately.
The clinical examination
Neurological and musculoskeletal assessment, differential diagnosis, identification of the tissues involved.
The sustaining factors
Work posture, sleep, activity level, apprehension about movement. These form part of the clinical picture alongside the state of the tissues.
A plan discussed with you
Goals, proposed interventions, the role expected of you, and scheduled points of reassessment.
Care that adjusts as we go
Everyone progresses at their own pace, and persistent pain rarely responds in a uniform way. That is why reassessment forms part of ongoing care rather than marking its final step.
In practice, you and your chiropractor agree on goals and a plan, then take stock at defined intervals. What each reassessment shows guides what follows: continuing, adjusting the approach, or exploring other avenues. If another form of expertise appears better suited to your situation, he will say so and direct you to the appropriate professional.
You will know at every point where things stand and what each recommendation rests on.
Coordinated care
Persistent pain often involves several elements at once. Recurring lower back pain may accompany a gait imbalance, which a podiatrist is better placed to assess.
Muscle tension built up over months may be the subject of regular manual work in massage therapy, alongside chiropractic care.
At Centre ProSanté West Island, these professionals practise under the same roof, which makes it easier to communicate when your situation warrants it.
